Is It Safe?

The safety of the process depends on validated sterilization, and validation is not optional. It is a regulatory requirement. Here is how safety is ensured:

  • Biological indicator testing: Autoclaves are tested with biological indicators (typically Geobacillus stearothermophilus spore strips) that represent the most resistant organisms to steam sterilization. If the spores are killed, everything in the load is sterilized.
  • Time, temperature, and pressure parameters: Each autoclave cycle must meet defined parameters (typically 250-275 degrees Fahrenheit at 15-30 psi for a minimum exposure time) to achieve sterilization.
  • Regulatory oversight: Treatment facilities operate under state permits that require regular validation testing, record-keeping, and inspections.
  • Post-treatment material handling: After autoclaving and shredding, the material is no longer classified as regulated medical waste. It is treated municipal solid waste that happens to contain recyclable material fractions.

The sterilization step is the key. Once waste has been properly autoclaved, it poses no more infectious risk than any other municipal solid waste. The recycling that follows is simply material recovery from a sterile waste stream.

  • Paper and fiber: Disposable drapes, packaging materials, and paper products that make up a portion of the red bag waste stream.
